Don't be so humble; you're not that great.

Eikev 5778

Deuteronomy 9:6-7

(6) Know, then, that it is not for any virtue of yours that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess; for you are a stiff-necked people. (7) Remember, never forget, how you provoked the LORD your God to anger in the wilderness: from the day that you left the land of Egypt until you reached this place, you have continued defiant toward the LORD.

Sforno on Deuteronomy 9:6-7

FOR YOU ARE A STIFF-NECKED PEOPLE: It is impossible to have righteousness and an upright heart if one is stiff necked, for he who is stiff necked follows the stubbornness of his heart and mind, even if a righteous teacher demonstrates with clear proof that his thoughts are improper and will lead to loss. This is due to the fact that he does not turn to the teacher, as though his neck were hard, like an iron sinew, such that he cannot turn in any direction. Rather, he follows the stubbornness of his heart as before.

REMEMBER, NEVER FORGET: It will attest to your being a stiff-necked people that you have gone back to provoke God time after time, like a dog who returns to its vomit (Proverbs 26:11). Even though every time you saw the discipline of the Lord your God and God's greatness!

Midrash Tehillim 107:1

That which Scripture states, "For My sake, for My sake, do I act" Lest [My name] be dishonored!"(Isaiah 48:11). It does not say, "for My sake" once, but rather "for My sake, for My sake," two times. Said the Holy Blessed One: I only act so that My name will not be dishonored.

Why two times, "for My sake, for My sake?" Said the Holy Blessed One: When you were in Egypt, I redeemed you for My name's sake: "God saved them for the sake of God's name"(Psalms 106:8). So too regarding Edom will I act for My name's sake. And just as I redeemed you in this world, so too will I redeem you in the world to come, as it says, "Whatever was, will be" (Ecclesiastes 1:9). For this reason Scripture says twice, "For My sake, for My sake." Why? "I will not give My glory to another" (Isaiah 48:11).

Said Rabbi Huna the Priest in the name of Rabbi Avin: This is what Moses rebukes Israel at the end of the 40 years: "It is not because of your virtues and your rectitude that you will be able to possess their country; but it is because of their wickedness" (Deuteronomy 9:5). Behold: God only acts for the sake of God's name.
