Exile and the Jews

Wednesdays, 1 - 2:30 PM, Social Hall Ever since Abraham’s famous argument with God, Judaism has been full of debate. Moses and Korah, David and Nathan, Hillel and Shammai, the Vilna Gaon and the Ba’al Shem Tov, Spinoza and the Amsterdam Rabbis . . . the list goes on. No wonder that Judaism cherishes the expression machloket l’shem shamayim, “an argument for the sake of heaven.” Beyond their historical importance, what makes these disputations so compelling is that nearly all of them, regardless of their epochs, are still being argued. The parade of characters spanning three millennia of biblical, rabbinic, and modern disputation reflects the panorama of Jewish history with its monumental political, ethical, and spiritual challenges. This series will examine Jewish responses to exile from the biblical period to our modern day. Musical Selichot Service
Motzei Shabbat, Sep 28th 8:30p to 11:00p
Havdalah and Learning Session, followed by Selichot service. Enter the season with prayer, music, and community. Members of Temple Israel Center, Shaarei Tikvah, Westchester Jewish Center, Greenburgh Hebrew Center, Jewish Community Center of Harrison, and Congregation KTI will join together for a musical Selichot service featuring clergy from all the congregation. Join us for what has become a highlight of the year.

Creating Days of Awe: Preparing for the High Holy Days through Mindfulness Meditation Jewish wisdom teaches that Elul, the month before Rosh Hashanah, is a special time for taking stock of the year that has passed and compassionately turning towards our highest selves. Join us for an exploration of mindfulness meditation practices that support the work of Cheshbon HaNefesh, or "accounting of the soul" as we prepare for the High Holy Days.
